Diane...thank you deeply for commenting. I remember reading that when you're delving into areas of pain -- physical or emotional -- the trick it be with it 5 minutes longer than you can possibly stand it. But how do you know when you've reached your threshold and have only 5 minutes left? Some kind of timer would be great.
I love that description "sitting in bath water that is 3 days old." Perfect.
By the way, I love all your recent videos and tweets!

Sonja - I love, love, LOVE this article. Probably because I am in the thick of something myself. Resistance. I've prayed for it to go away, tried to cleverly divert it, go head to head with it. When I do, it morphs into some other form - sluggishness becomes zealous email checking that transforms into a sudden uncontrollable urge to eat a lot of chocolate, and then perhaps a burst of energy that gets wasted on organizing my pantry. Feel the resistance. Move into it - that's what I've been trying to do lately. It's like sitting in bath water that is 3 days old. After reading your article, I'm beginning to realize that I probably haven't allowed myself to sit in it long enough before I go rushing off to do something I think will make it go away - like refilling my coffee cup. I'm going to give it another shot. You inspire me!

My original motivation for meditating was to find answers - I wanted them now and this method took me there and still does - 20 plus years! As a multi-tasker it has allowed me to slow down, see and appreciate where I am and what I have to help get me through life. Love, love, love it - and would suggest trying various ways until you find one way that works best for you! Practice does help but there is a significant ROI (return on investment) whether it is for 5 minutes or an hour.

Wow! Here I am "bored" and I decided to peruse my google reader and came across your blog post WITHOUT even knowing it was your blog, and funny how I read your comment about my blog post this morning and it had been a long time since we connected, and low and behold, your post contained a message I needed to hear! It's amazing how we are all messengers of God, the angels, etc... They always manage to send us the right messages at the right moments! And I bet they all cross their fingers hoping that WE GET IT! I GOT IT!

Thanks!!

Terrific post, Sonja. I often find myself faltering in attempts to succinctly explain to my clients the practical, beneficial results of achieving stillness through self-care efforts (meditation being one such magnifiscent tool). You have captured it here in simple perfection: "I’ve discovered the true impact of meditation is felt not when you’re quietly saying your mantra on the couch, but when you’re out in the world dealing with life as it happens." I LOVE THAT!

Pardon the gushing, but once again you inspire me with the easy flow of your writing and your incredbily fun phrasing, i.e. "prayer flare" and "pay-attention tingles" -- LOVE THOSE!. The content of this piece is also wonderful. Intellect is awesome, but don't let her captain the ship, right? The real magic happens when I move from my heart and use intellect as a tool.

Terrific post!
